AI companion vs therapy: what each is actually good for
An AI companion is useful for daily reflection, naming emotions, preparing difficult conversations and keeping continuity between real sessions. It is not a therapist, it cannot diagnose or treat, and it must not be used in crisis — in an emergency contact local emergency services.
What an AI does well
Availability at 2am, zero social cost, infinite patience, and memory of small details. For rumination, journalling and rehearsing a conversation, that combination is genuinely useful.
What it cannot do
It cannot assess risk, hold clinical responsibility, or provide treatment. It has no body in the room. Anthropos is explicitly a reflection tool, not a medical service.
A reasonable combination
Use the companion between sessions to capture what happened and what you felt, then bring the summary to a professional. Continuity is where most self-work is lost, and it is exactly what software is good at.
